Like the Scarlet and Cream in the stands on Autumn Saturdays, or Mueller Tower’s resemblance to an ear of corn, the Nebraska Ring is rich in meaning and symbolism.
Each official ring features a red garnet stone with a gold Nebraska block N inlay, mimicking the “Sea of Red” and fan loyalty our university is know for. A smaller signet design that does not bear the stone is also available, but the block N remains unchanged, a distinguished symbol of our university.
The left shank features the Love Library cupola, under which most students have spent time researching, studying or becoming “lost in the stacks.” The cupola is visible across most of the campus and can even be seen from several miles south of campus on13th Street. Every student can remember their first stroll across the campus under the cupola with the leaves changing under their feet and Mueller Tower off in the distance playing Hail Varsity.
Just as a diploma on the wall bears the University Seal and the founding date, the Nebraska Ring features the same – allowing you to take a part of your degree with you wherever you go.
Both the seal and the cupola are flanked by ears of corn, reminding us of our beloved Cornhusker mascot, and the entire state that is represented by our University.
The palm side of the ring connects the two shoulders with a replica of one of the campus columns. The connection symbolizes the relationships that were formed during the time spent on campus. Whether it was in passing on the way home from class, on the way to a football game or receiving a special kiss underneath, the columns will always have a special place in student’s hearts no matter how far life takes them from campus.
The columns have a more symbolic meaning as well. The columns are a symbol of the knowledge and mental strength that students will obtain before they leave Nebraska.
When students have earned at least 52 credit hours, they will be eligible to obtain their own Nebraska Ring. Their finger will replace that column on the interior, indeed symbolizing that they now posses the strength and knowledge that the columns represent, and most importantly, the ability to stand by themselves.
As each column also stands by itself, it will never be alone as it is surrounded by others just like it – so too will be the case of Nebraska graduates. No matter where they end up, they run into Nebraskans and the bearers of the ring will always carry a part of campus with them. The ring states to all, “I am a person who strives for excellence – a discoverer, a leader – a graduate of the University of Nebraska.”
On the interior, the Nebraska Ring is engraved with the owner's initials, degree and class year, and also bears the Nebraska Alumni Association logo. A registration number aids in recovering lost rings.
Symbols surround us no matter where we go on campus. Now those symbols can join graduates for life telling others and reminding yourself that There is No Place Like Nebraska.
