Memories from 1958
Remember when gas was 30 cents a gallon? When Charles Starkweather terrorized Nebraska with his killing spree? When the ATOs took first place at the Kosmet Klub Fall Revue? When NASA was created and the Explorer was launched? When Elvis performed at the Coliseum? When Piper Hall, the new girls’ dorm, was added to Neihart? When students filled the Union Ballroom to hear Eleanor Roosevelt speak? When novelty songs, such as Sheb Wooley’s Flying Purple People Eater were being featured at sock hops? When the Tri-Delts won the Ivy Day Sing for the third straight year? When Toyota and Datsun cars were introduced to the U.S. market? When the Corncobs and Tassels promoted Husker spirit on game day?
"I don't recall if our initial panty raid was during our freshman or sophomore year, but it was a great experience for a kid from small-town Nebraska. I was living in Selleck Quadrangle at that time and proudly returned to the dorm that evening with a precious souvenir. As I was walking into Selleck, I spied Dean of Men Frank Halgren entering the dorm by another door, and it appeared to me he was busy checking for evidence. So, I made a quick detour into the nearest men's room, got rid of my "precious souvenir," and strolled to my room feeling very secure that no evidence would be found on me but also a bit sad that my evening's trophy was gone!"
