NU-APP Frequently Asked Questions

1. Will I find out if the students I have contacted actually attend NU?
In September, we will work with the Office of Admissions to find out which of the students each volunteer contacted actually enrolled for classes. Incoming freshmen enroll for classes all summer at New Student Enrollment. We hope to have this information to you soon after.
2. May I receive additional postcards in my packets?
We would be happy to send a couple of extra postcards in your packets.
3. May I receive a list of the students from my area who have enrolled at NU?
Because of privacy issues, we are not able to provide lists of current students. If you would like to invite students from you area to an upcoming event, please let us know at least four weeks in advance. We will work with the Office of Admission to send the information to the students.
4. Why aren’t we contacting students prior to admission?
Many students are very protective of their personal information being released from their ACT/SAT scores. The Office of Admissions will provide address information once the student has requested admittance to NU. We will continue to address the issue and let you know of any changes in the future.
5. I would like to contact more students from my area. Why do I receive only a few names?
Based on the number of students who apply from your state, we divide them among the volunteers or alternate volunteers in your area. You might not receive a list of students for each list we receive from the Office of Admissions.
6. I have not heard from any of the students I have contacted. Is this standard for most volunteers?
From the comments sent to us, yes. We appreciate your willingness to reach out to these students and establish an additional contact for the university. Through this program, we hope to let students know there are NU grads all over the United States and it is a great institution at which to earn a degree.
7. How can I become more involved in my area, beyond Postcards of Pride?
For those who indicated an interest in becoming more involved, we have forwarded your information onto the Office of Admissions. With a growing relationship with the Office of Admissions, we plan to involve our alumni more across the nation in college fairs and recruitment functions. This is a work-in-progress so was ask for your patience.
8. May I receive an e-mail before the postcards arrive in the mail?
If you have provided your e-mail address, we will send you a message as the packet is being sent. You will know it is on the way before it arrives.
9. I was surprised to be contacted more than once for Postcards of Pride. How many mailings can I expect to receive?
The recruitment season at NU is from October through March. During that time, we receive lists from the Office of Admissions once a month with newly admitted students. We select alumni to contact these students based on these lists. We have chosen a rolling program so that we can reach more students. If the lists were held until March, some volunteers would receive 30-40 names to contact all at once. We thought a few at a time would be best. If you would like to limit the number of mailings you receive, please contact us and we will note it in our database.
10. Is it possible to contact students with a similar career interest, instead of by region?
This is a great suggestion and one that we have talked about. We have found many students are entering their freshmen year in the area of general studies. We can reach more students by region.
11. Can we get a better variety of postcards?
The postcards are provided by the Office of Admissions and are exclusive to this program. They are not used for any other departments or offices on campus. If you have suggestions for future designs, please let us know.
If you have more questions or comments, please contact Chris Andersen by e-mail or by phone (888) 353-1874.
