So You Want To Start A Nebraska Alumni Chapter?
9 things you need to know before getting started
 

1. What are Nebraska Alumni Chapters?
As an extension of the Nebraska Alumni Association alumni chapters are groups of volunteers formed geographically to keep alumni and friends connected to the university and each other through leadership, programming, communication and membership.  Nebraska Alumni Chapters have an exciting mix of cultural, athletic, recreational and academic related activities.

2. How is a Nebraska Alumni Chapter formed?
A chapter may be formed in any convenient geographical area with boundaries established by agreement among the Association, the organizers of the chapter, and any Nebraska chapter already in existence which may be affected thereby.  It is desirable to cover a territory including the residences of 200 or more alumni.

3. How much volunteer time is involved with a Nebraska Alumni Chapter?
The amount of time involved varies from chapter to chapter.  Typically, the board of directors meets once a month for an hour to discuss agenda items and chapter business.  Additional time is spent on planning and implementing chapter events that can be shared by committees to limit each volunteer’s time.

4. What are the goals of a Nebraska Alumni Association chapter?
Some of the goals of a chapter are to:
 

  • Promote membership in the Association
  • Assist with recruitment of prospective students
  • Provide career networking opportunities for local alumni
  • Serve as welcoming or hospitality contact for the Association
  • Coordinate local alumni activities and events
5. What support and services do alumni chapters get from the Nebraska Alumni Association? 

Alumni Staff Support:  Out of state and in-state director to work with each chapter.

General, Members Only, and Scholarship Mailings:  Limited free mailers per fiscal year to alumni or members only within a designated area to notify of events.

General Liability Insurance:  Coverage of up to $1,000,000 available to chapters at no charge.
 
Tax exemption:  Chapters may qualify to benefit from the Association’s exempt status.

and support:  Variety of services on Association’s web site, including events calendar, free web site hosting and permanent email addresses at no cost to chapter.

Special Husker vendor discounts:  Chapters will have an opportunity to receive discounts on Husker merchandise.

Access to local alumni lists and labels:  Local chapter can use to promote activities.

Chapter Planning & Resource Guide:  Reference guide for volunteer leaders.

Volunteer Leader Newsletter:  Quarterly newsletter for volunteer leaders.

Volunteer Leader E-Flash:  Electronic news flash for volunteer leaders, with deadlines, tips and university updates.

Chapters Promotions:  Chapter leaders are listed in the Association’s membership kits and on the Association's web site.

Party & Supply Requests:  Event supplies including pom poms, centerpieces, nametags, balloons and free giveaways for events.

Volunteer Leadership Conference:  Annual volunteer training and celebration for volunteer leaders.

MemberShare Program:  Additional funds are given to each chapter based on new memberships local chapters recruit to the Nebraska Alumni Association. Recruitment materials and staff support is provided.

6. What types of activities, programs and events do Nebraska Alumni Chapters plan?

7. How are Nebraska Alumni Chapters involved with membership?

Membership promotion through chapter mailings and at chapter events are primary ways to increase Association and local chapter membership.  At chapter events that involve an admission charge, special discounts should be given to Association members to serve as a benefit.  Membership materials and promotional assistance are available form the Alumni Association.  Optionally, chapters can participate in our MemberShare program by recruiting new members to the Association and receive 10% of dues with the opportunity to receive additional premiums.

8. How are Nebraska Alumni Chapters involved with scholarships?
One of the greatest services and contributions your chapter can make to your university and community is the establishment of a scholarship program.  Chapters raise money matched by the Association (in-state chapters) and University (out-state chapters) and have the opportunity to select recipients in their area.  To sponsor a chapter scholarship please contact the University of Nebraska Foundations at 1-800-432-3216.

9.  What are the different chapter levels?
Red Letter Level- The association’s most ambitious and organized chapters, hosting a wide variety of activities and earning a special banner honoring their achievements.

Chartered Level- Active chapters that sponsor a fair amount of activities and events throughout the year.

Spirit Level- Chapters typically active during the football season with occasional activities during other parts of the year.
